About Grade 3 MusicThird grade brings us to the year of Recorder! In the beginning of the year, students spend their time reviewing rhythms and learning to create and compose using the staff. This work with the staff is crucial for students to develop the skills needed to play the recorder and learn their recorder repertoire
Once students are proficient in identifying the notes on the staff, we then begin to learn how to play the recorder. All materials for Recorder are provided to each student. Along with a recorder, students receive a folder with music to practice at home. Students are required to practice at least 10 minutes a day and a log is provided to record minutes practiced daily. This year students will be following the Recorder Karate curriculum in hopes of passing all 9 levels and receiving a black belt at their Spring Recorder Concert. Recorder is an exciting time in elementary music. For some students, this will be the first time that they have learned how to play a musical instrument and be a part of an ensemble. Students will learn how to play a 'part' in music, follow a conductor, prepare and put on a concert, and how to compose their own music utilizing rhythms and pitches. This can also be a challenging time for students as they are working to put many musical concepts and ideas together, maybe for the first time. Classstime will be used for teaching, reviewing and playing. Students should then take their work home to practice all concepts learned in class, to ensure that they are successful in the art of the Recorder!
